Is Antalya or Istanbul better for dental treatment?
Neither city is better for teeth; the clinic is what matters. Istanbul has far more clinics and flights all year. Antalya is smaller, with the airport close to the centre and the sea within reach. The right choice depends on the clinic you trust, your flights and how you want to spend the days between appointments.
The rest of this guide compares the practical side: travel, getting around, accommodation and recovery.
How do flights compare?
Istanbul has two large airports and direct flights from almost everywhere, all year. Antalya has many direct flights from the UK, Germany and Poland, most frequent from spring to autumn. In winter some routes run less often or connect through Istanbul.
If your treatment needs two trips, as implants do, check both travel dates before you book. Our guide on how long to stay shows typical stays per treatment.
How easy is it to get around?
Antalya’s airport is about 25 minutes from the city centre and most coastal hotels, and the clinic, hotel and old town are close together. Istanbul is a city of over fifteen million people; journeys between airport, hotel and clinic can take an hour or more at busy times. Either way, a private transfer on clinic days takes the stress away.
Where do you stay, and what do you do on free days?
In Antalya, many people stay by the sea. Free afternoons are spent in the old town of Kaleiçi, on the coast or on a boat trip. Istanbul offers museums, the Bosphorus and some of the world’s great historic sites, and is busier and more urban.
Think about how you will feel. After preparation for veneers or after implant surgery, a quiet afternoon by the water often suits better than a full day of sightseeing. Your doctor tells you what to avoid, such as very hot sun or heavy exercise, on particular days.
Does the season matter?
In Antalya it does. July and August are hot and busy, with higher hotel prices. April to June and September to November are warm and calmer. Winter is mild and quiet, and some seasonal hotels close. Istanbul has cold, wet winters and warm summers, and is busy all year.
Is the choice of clinics different?
Istanbul has many more clinics, from very large practices to small ones. Antalya has fewer, including some that treat mainly international patients. A larger choice is not an advantage in itself; what matters is how you check a clinic. Our guide with twelve questions to ask any clinic abroad works in either city.
In both cities, clinics that promote treatment to international patients need an authorisation from the Turkish Ministry of Health for health tourism. Ask for the number, and check that it is shown on the clinic’s website.
What about follow-up after you go home?
This depends on the clinic, not the city. Ask how check-ups work once you are home, who your named contact is, and what the written aftercare terms cover. Ask also whether you receive your scans, X-rays and material details, so that your dentist at home can see exactly what was done.
Why are we in Antalya?
Because the days between appointments are part of the treatment. We wanted a clinic where you can walk from a morning appointment to an afternoon by the sea, with a lab next door so your ceramist sees you in person. That suits our way of working: two rooms, one doctor and one ceramist for each patient. You can read more on the Your trip page.
